Transforming Liver Health in Africa Through Collaboration, Education, Scientific Exchange, and Consensus

SOLDA's main objectives are to advance and disseminate the science and practice of hepatology through educational activities, conferences, and partnerships.

We foster research and facilitate consensus and practical guidance. In the creation of a community of hepatology scientists and clinicians throughout Africa, we promote communication between healthcare professionals throughout the region.

What We Do

Our mission is to advance and disseminate the science and practice of hepatology, and to promote liver health and quality of patient care. We foster research that leads to improved treatment options for millions of liver disease patients in Africa. We support the education and professional development of all professionals dedicated to hepatobiliary discoveries and patient care. We also collaborate with government agencies and sister societies to achieve the prevention and cure of liver diseases.

To improve patient care for Liver disease in Africa, we need to achieve several goals, such as:

Increasing public awareness and education about the causes, symptoms, prevention and treatment of liver disease, especially viral hepatitis and alcohol misuse. This can be done through mass media campaigns, community outreach programs, and involvement of local leaders and influencers.

Strengthening healthcare systems and infrastructure to provide accessible, affordable, and quality care for people suffering from liver disease. This includes training and retaining more health care workers, especially hepatologists and gastroenterologists; decentralizing diagnostic and treatment services to rural and remote areas; ensuring reliable supply of essential medicines and equipment; and establishing referral networks and guidelines.

Improving surveillance and data collection on the epidemiology and burden of liver disease in Africa. This requires investing in more research and collaboration among stakeholders, as well as implementing standardized methods and tools for screening, diagnosis, staging, and monitoring of people with liver disease.

Advocating for political commitment and funding to address the liver disease challenge in Africa. This involves engaging with policy makers, donors, civil society, and international partners to prioritize liver health in National and regional agendas; mobilizing resources and allocating budgets for liver disease programs; and ensuring accountability and transparency in the implementation of policies and interventions.

It is a complex and multifaceted problem that requires a comprehensive and coordinated response from all stakeholders.

Conference on Liver Disease in Africa

Co-organized by SOLDA and Academic Medical Education in close collaboration with regional societies, COLDA 2024 aims at empowering healthcare professionals (HCPs) to diagnose, prevent, treat, and achieve a cure for liver diseases for the benefit of patients in Africa.

This being the 7th COLDA, we continue to cultivate a platform that provides a unique opportunity for clinicians, researchers, policymakers, industry representatives, and other healthcare professionals in the African region.
